I seldom pre-wash new clothes because of color-fastness concerns. Also, it's not always convenient; I would have to pay to wash my clothes one piece at a time or even go to the dry cleaner's for some garments. I guess pre-cleaning is a healthy hygienic habit, but it's not always a great option for people on a budget. To be honest, sometimes I buy new clothes in place of washing the ones I already have, because it's just more convenient. Plus, don't people normally try on clothes before they buy them? That means that I have to wear them unwashed to find out if they fit or not, right?
There's a product out there called Shout Color Catcher sheets. I can remember when they first came out, the ads were like "wash everything together with no fear!" and people cranked on that as being lazy. But I'm a quilter, and I like them for the quilts I make, since I'm putting high contrast colors next to each other. There are other color catching sheets, too.

I don't understand this - don't you wash your clothes at all? If you are worried about color-fastness, that's MORE of a reason to wash before wearing and getting dye into/onto your skin (I actually know someone who yrs. ago got blood poisoning for the dye in unwashed denim). Trying on clothes OVER your underclothes doesn't constitute "wearing them".
I did work at VS a looonnnnggg time ago and never put anything used back on the shelf. They had to have the tags on them.
I always wash new VS stuff before wearing it
