The "starting to get old fad" of the 5 o'clock shadow looks as though the wearer was in too much of a hurry to shave, or just didn't care. Not attractive at all.

That's because the pretty boys ie (metrosexuals) started doing it too. It sort of ruins the appeal IMO. Country boys and blue collar men have been doing it for centuries. To the trained female eye, she can spot who is the REAL deal, and who isn't. Zach who works in the IT department at Google "ain't" it....
Oh, okay...so the sideburns are actually beard hair then.
Not head-hair.
Is that right?
Does that happen at puberty or something? (Sideburns, I mean...) Because I don't think my sons have any of that stuff going on...the hairdresser just kind of ends the hair down in front of their ears in like a pointy thing. Sort of.
It must be hard to be a guy. There...there is a pain...between my ears.
Yes. Beard hair is pubic hair, it's the same hair on ones crotch, actually.
I typically get more attention after a clean shave and have been told (mostly by women) that letting it all grow out could be a sign of frustration and waywardness. Either way I'll save the mammoth look for winter and stay clean shaven the rest of the year.
I've also heard that a mustache without a beard/goatee is "creepy". Does anyone here share that sentiment?
One thing no one has mentioned is the painful aspect of shaving. I have pretty sensitive skin and used to get kind of red and splotchy. I switched to an electric but that didn't seem much better. I have a nice electric trimmer that I set to about 3/4 inch, that seems to hold for about 2 weeks. I will never shave my beard!
I have grown my beard a few times but I don't like it. I look older and neglected and I hate how it feels. I shave every day mostly with an electric razor which only takes me about 2 minutes. It is not the closest shave I can get but it is close enough. I also have a nice Gillette Fusion Pro Glide razor which I use when I want a nice close shave. That takes a little more time but to me it is a very small price to pay for the clean shaven and smooth look. Shaving is no big deal to me, it is pretty much second nature just like brushing my teeth and brushing my hair.
If I cut my hair short then I look decent with a scruffy look. If I let my hair grow out to about 3 inches or more I look like a hobo with scruff. I can either do the rugged look or the surfer boy look, not both together.
It's the same consistancy, and courseness, so it has to be related, as it's not like head hair at all. The onoy hair I can tell close to head hair, is pit hair.
