I guess they have been the "in" thing for a bit and im slow to get on the train...but I ordered a pair and they will be here today. I got a tan and blue pair. Can you wear them with just about anything or are they one of those " only with X outfit "?
Duck boots were originally part of rural New England lifestyle. Ideally, it was meant to be worn mucking around wetlands while hunting (for you guesed it, duck). Common attire might've been plaid/flannel, jeans, a hunting jacket or down/puffer vest. Nowadays people might just use them in rain or winter around town; though they have become trendy here, especially with younger adults, and outside of New England.
Seriously, though, you can wear them with a basic sweater and shirt combo (aka preppy) with khaki/cordoroy or jeans; a fleece and blouse with jeans; or stick with the traditional plaid/flannel and jeans aesthetic, and add a down vest or jacket if you want. Or, try a denim (or plaid/flannel) shirtdress/tunic with leggings for a feminine touch.
Hipsters may try to add pearls, mix prints/patterns, and other delicate items, etc., but it's best when kept simple, low key.
These have been around for decades. But perhaps they are now having a moment? I consider them functional footwear. I do not choose them but I think they would be fine in wet conditions. As a fashion item, well why not? We wear down jackets and vests now as fashion items. What is the difference?
I had some back in high school when I went to Canada in the winter. Mine were LL Bean really warm. I used them for a few years but they don't be have much use for me now. I just have donated them during one of the moves I made since then.
They are having a moment, even hear in California.
I had some in the 80s or 90s and wore them a lot. I just bought another pair last year and have been wearing them all the time lately. They're great in rain and mud or even light snow and slush. The soles also provide some traction on ice.
What's REALLY become trendy with the hipsters are the L.L.Bean original hunting boots, the tall ones. They sell right out. Beans is supposed to be making a whole lot more by next year so there won't be a shortage anymore. I just saw a man and woman hipster couple with identical L.L.Bean hunting boots. Spendy but to each his own.
Duck boots--we just wear them with corduroy pants and whatever jacket we happen to be wearing. They're very practical.

I've always considered them to be rain/mud wear only. They are not comfortable enough, or cute enough, to be regular daily footwear for me.
I wear them occasionally with matching camouflage pants and parka. I accessorize with a Lohman goose flute and Browning Silver Hunter 12 gauge semiautomatic shotgun.
I still occasionally wear the LL Bean duck boots I purchased in the early 80s when I was in college in Boston. In the intervening 35 years I returned them once to LL Bean for refurbishing. Wow.
They can be worn with 'anything' but I personally would not wear them with a ball gown or other fancy dress .. unless you add a few sequins on the toes or laces perhaps. On reflection though .. anything goes these days .. so why not! They are very comfortable and I am not a slave to fashion.
