It is not really custom in North America for a man to just buy a gift for his girl freind every time they are on a date?
If that is the expectation from her that is pretty concerning because it comes off as if you are paying for her company and then the date seems more like a service. It that is the case she is not exactly your girl freind but "a women you are paying to spend time with".... which is a profession and not a romantic relationship.
You may want to check her motives because this behaviour unless it was a occasion ex her birthday, your anniversary or a holiday...... he being mad about not getting a gift is wired.
I think you might want your thread transfered to the relationship forum.
