I don't think I'd put them in the dryer. When I had a top loader, I would put things in the dryer for a few minutes to get rid of the wrinkles from the spin cycle, then hang.
I do the reverse--hang to dry, then fluff in the dryer for a few minutes.
there are a few reasons manufacturers use "dry clean only"
--clothes often look much better when dry cleaned rather than washed.
--flimsy fabric can disintegrate in the washer
--fabric that hasn't been washed before can shrink and pucker
I never dry clean anything (this isn't that kind of place). I hand wash a lot of clothes, especially anything thin or flimsy.
I have successfully hand-washed and even machine washed silk (that stuff is really strong!) but your mileage may vary.
I wash my dry clean only clothes without issues. I wash them by hand in the washer since they don't really get dirty (just rub them a few times, then rinse, and let it spin a little). I don't put them in the dryer though -- that might shrink them.
I do the same, hand wash & hang to dry.
