I mean, just imagine a president (or a presidential candidate) growing a beard these days. Also, Abe would be shamed into oblivion for not wearing a flag pin.
What a concept...historic overachievers not being too obsessed with their appearance. I suspect that was because they occupied their minds with more important things. And, the people who voted them into office cared more about what they said or did, not their hair. Not to mention that being camera ready at all times wasn't necessary. Photography wasn't pervasive if it even existed. At best they had a barber armed with soap and razor, not a celebrity makeup artist.
The looks thing took off when presidential debates started getting televised. Some presidents weren't even that good at public speaking back in the day. People complained that you could barely hear Thomas Jefferson when he gave a speech and he certainly didn't capture the floor.
Our process for selecting a President has turned into a reality game show.
Their haircuts are no different than today's. Hair grows kind of wildly, and unless someone is meticulous and gets it cut every two weeks, or they are on TV or movies, that's how it normally looks.
In fact, there are some women who get it cut to look that way sometimes.
