Late thirties, early forties is when a woman begins to dress up more often. At this age, women can get away with wearing more expensive outfits. I'm really not a fan of this trend over the past two decades of wearing expensive clothing just anywhere; there's a time and a place for it, and when I see a 17 year old in a $2,000 outfit it just looks horribly out of place.
So that's that. I'd opt for simple but very nice clothing-- cashmere sweaters with pants and nicer shoes. You don't have to look old, but when beauty is no longer the issue it's time to start looking nicer.
I feel somewhat gay for even posting in this thread, but what the hell, I'll let my gay side out for the evening...
I think this depends on how well you have kept up your figure, how "young" you look, etc. I've seen 45 year old women who can wear whatever they want and not look inappropriate, and I've seen 40 year old women who look like they should be wearing granny dresses.
Early 40s is still young....if you look good, why not dress how you like?
