IMHO, the reason any those fads ever come back is due to what's available in thrift shores. While designers are rushing to capitalize on what the "downtown kids" are wearing, the kids are already onto the next generation cleaning out their closets.

Cause they are comfy and warm, and invoke warm memories with some of us. I remember when I was a kid I would always steal my Dad's flannel shirts to sleep in while he was away at work (he was a truck driver when I was a kid).

I LOVE flannel shirts and have a few in my closet. I wear them because I am very cold natured and I find flannel the warmest shirts to wear. I also have the flannel nightr gowns... (and wear them!)

My SO wears them on daily basis in the Fall/Winter, not for any kind of fashion statement, but because they are warm. It doesn't matter the color; he doesn't match the flannel to the rest of his outfit. That's just what is comfortable for him, especially since his work doesn't involve wearing any kind of suit and tie.

And I dig it, because I'm not into the whole metrosexual, my-guy-spends-more-time-getting-ready-than-I-do thing. Ah, a breath of fresh air, he is! We only go shopping for new jeans and stuff when the old ones are in tatters. He's awesome.

Aww.
My cold-weather ensemble generally consists of jeans, a tank top or teeshirt, and a flannel. And a hoodie over that, if it's really cold.
I think they're cute.

I don't know about the suburban Northeast, but here in the Urban Northeast they're definitely back in style. It's actually part of the Hip Hop culture/style these days.
