Sarah Jessica Parker's dress looked like the nightgown my mother bought me before I went off to school. OK, my nightgown was thin polyester and the top part was some flimsy fabric. But having classy fabrics didn't help SJP, IMO, that dress draped weirdly and was not flattering.

I liked most of the gowns from the elegant to the whimsical. There were a few clunkers. Here's a nice photo collection 2010 Academy Awards: Oscars Red Carpet - NY Daily News

Maggie Gyllenhaal was lovely in that colorful gown, yet I've read and heard several negative comments regarding her ensemble which I didn't understand. She looked a lot better on TV than in these pictures Oscar.com - 82nd Red Carpet - Maggie Gyllenhaal

LOL, she looked like a pinata!

I agree about Maggie's dress. I thought it looked nice. But you may be right that some dresses look better on TV than in still photos.

Although Nicole Richie is kind of young to be channeling Anne Bancroft, I kind of dug her dramatic outfit and makeup. Bell sleeves can be so striking.

Did you mean this one worn by Zoe Saldana? She must have done this on purpose to get publicity because she is usually fairly stylish. This dress makes me dizzy.

Zoe Saldana's gown? I liked the bodice, but the bottom reminded me of a pinata or parade float.

ETA: Just realized somebody said "pinata" already! I missed a bunch of posts.

I loved Nicole Richie's gown!!!! I think it would be better suited on a taller woman, but she still rocked it.
