Hi all! Based on what is happening these days about gun violence, I was wondering if the gun culture is popular in the NWA area? Do many people and families own a gun? Have you heard of any gun violence happening in NWA and its surrounding areas? Thanks!

I hope it is popular as we are considering this area for retirement.

You mean compared to the heavily regulated and limited gun culture in California?
Well sorry to say NWA is a free state. But last time I checked the mass shooting in California number 31 since 1965, the mass shootings in NWA as far as I know - ZERO!

Arkansas is #2 or #3 in guns owned per capita, depending on which report you read.

AR is very gun friendly as well as having a pretty low crime rate. Whether people carry guns or not, gun violence still happens. So far, I am glad we live in AR. Just look at Chicago as an example. Don't they have some pretty strong gun laws? I certainly do not think one has much to do with the other.

Lots of gun ownership in AR. Truly don’t understand why people think restricting our 2nd amendment right makes us safer.

Comparing a small section of a small state to the entirety of a large state is misleading. (I think California’s laws are useless ploys to further the cause of that nanny-state.)
Not only has Arkansas had mass shootings, we also need to dispel the myth that Arkansas as a whole is one of the safer states.
It generally ranks among the worst for violent crime in the nation. Usually top 10-12.
Most recently, I believe it was ranked #5 in the nation for violent crime among the states with a murder rate also among the top 5 I believe.
While it’s true there are some hot spots that bring the state down, pretty much every part of the state has rough areas as well as very nice places.
You can’t have numbers that bad just because of a couple of counties in the Delta. Anyone familiar with the state as a whole and are honest with themselves knows this.
Is Arkansas a horrible place because of it? No. It’s still America dadgumit, and a person can do just fine for themselves and stay out of trouble if they choose to do so.
All that being said, Arkansas has a strong gun culture across the board. Just like a lot of places places, hunting is popular and people like things that go boom.
I personally do not think that is to blame for all the problems there. More guns or less guns will not make much of a dent until we fix far deeper societal problems.

The most worthless statistic is ..STATE crime rate ..

As many posters in TN have said....." if Memphis was in Mississippi our STATE crime rate would look a lot better"

Remove Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and Blytheville's crime statistics and Arkansas' STATE crime rate would look better, also.

As an Arkansas native who’s lived in various parts of the state, I don’t believe leaving those areas out of the stats would bump Arkansas up into Vermont territory in the rankings.

Yes thank you we know, and I am sure the OP knows, about the population disparity. My point was really to point out the silliness of the question of "gun culture" in a region to satisfy her real question related to gun violence or crime in general. Of course that's a national debate right now that we need not get into here (maybe in the "Great Debates" forum) but even the strongest gun control advocate sees the need to address mental health, young male moral guidance, drugs, social media, and poverty. But I think the OP is misguided - do you know the OP presented the exact same question in another regional forum? So there might be another hidden agenda on OPs mind here.

But I do stand by my statement (unless proven otherwise) - there has never been a mass shooting in NWA, not Arkansas as a whole, but NWA.

So this is really the point: OP forget about you queries on "gun culture", that will get you nowhere. As has been mentioned, you have good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods in every community. You can drill down into crime statistics by state, or by region, or by city, or even by zip code if you need. That should be your focus.
