If I'm doing a commission on a portrait, I'll use several methods, including the grid.

also use the "mirror method" to check for accuracy. (Look at the image in reverse, so the mind isn't "fooled" into skipping over errors. Also could turn the image upside down for the same effect.)

Albrecht Durer used the grid method when drawing in order to come as close as possible to rendering the object(s) he chose to draw. If it was good enough for Durer, then we'd have to do a lot of thinking before dismissing the method.
