I am traveling for 2 hours with my fish...will they survive in those pet shop plastic bags? I can't fit a massive tank in my car. Will it survive the car ride? Or what about those small, 5-10 gallon tanks they sell for $7? Are they any good?
I brought 4 fish on a 5 hour trip with me one time in one of those bags and they where OK. I did have to keep opening and blowing air in the bag though I am not exactly sure if that was right thing to do.
They sell those small plastic carrying boxes for fish at petco. Ge one of those and a 10G airpump and stone and keep that running to agitate the water if youre really concerned.
I would ask the pet store for four large bags, fill them with enough water so the fish are barely covered and lay the bags on their side in a foam cooler. You want the bags to contain as much air as possible while keeping the fish covered. I'd put one fish in each bag and then put the first bag inside the other. Most likely you won't have any trouble.
I've transported large goldfish in kitchen trash bags inside of 5 gallon buckets without any problem. I use the unscented ones to avoid problems with chemical contamination.
easiest way is actually a cooler filled with just enough water to cover the fish...and the lid cracked open slightly (or a bucket again just enough water to cover the fish.
the bags work, BUT unless you have pure oxygen its difficult to get enough O2 in the bag (we breath Out CO2 so blowing in them doesn't help) and difficult to get them well sealed.
however for a 2 hour trip if you use large bags, double bag and tightly band...
For long trips, i've used a 5-gallon bucker, with lid. I put an air stone and heater in the bucket. I had a 12V to 120V inverter so i had the power to do so.
From what i've seen at my local pet store the fish they sell come in plastic bags packed in boxes and sealed from wherever they farm/catch the fish to the pet store, i'd say if you can control the temperature your fish will survive in plastic bags for days.
