thanks to everyone who responded to my post a few weeks about sights to see in the Sedona area. i've put together our itinerary and incorporated a lot of suggestions i got on this board.

one question: we're spending an afternoon/evening in flagstaff and going to the snowbowl and at night, the lowell observatory. i'm looking for a family friendly restaurant, not fast food, but not the Ritz either . Kitchy and theme is ok - with a southwestern flair would be great, but not necessary. I've got 2 9 year old boys who are very well behaved, so they can handle a nice place, it doesn't have to be chuck-e-cheese.

any suggestions?

tia!

The kids will LOVE the "Galaxy Diner" - easy to find on old Hwy Route 66:

"Galaxy Diner" 931 W Rte 66, Flagstaff, AZ 86001, Telephone: 928-774-9694 (open late summer nights I think?)
Authentic, classic, all-american, route 66 diner in every detail, decore, food, service - fun & fulfilling :-)

For a uniquely "Flagstaff" natural place, our family loves downtown. We park the car across the main drag, in the big lot sort of by the old railroad station (street parking seems always a bear). Then we walk across the tracks and into downtown. Lots of great locally owned cafes entice us, but we always seem to hold-out for a little cafe on San Francisco St.:

"Cafe Espress" - 16 N San Francisco Street, Flagstaff, AZ 86001, Telephone:928-774-0541: The wait can be long sometimes, as it is a tiny place. The dishes are very eclectic. Breads & pastries lovely. Coffees & teas special. A few dishes kids like, but more of a treat for us grown-ups. The staff make kids feel special though - and they have cool shirts for sale. Our daughters loved their logo & HAD to have shirts at our first visit.

Bot the Galaxy and Espress are on the same side of the valley as the observatory road turn-off. Snowbowl is opposite side of the valley - just for a bit of perspective.

Theres a little restraunt called Fiddlers, we used to go there frequently but Im not sure they are still around, or maybe its just been so long since our last visit we've forgotten exactly where it was, but I can tell you its on the west side of town, neat the Walmart section. Last time my daughter and I were there, a few months ago, Flagstaff had changed a bit so we had a tough time remembering even where the Walmart was, lol. It was cozy, not too formal but not too shabby, kind of more in-between. Hope you get to enjoy your stay in beautiful Flagstaff.

The Crown Railroad Cafe is a nice place especially with kids. They have trains running around the top edge of the walls. Also good food.

Fiddlers is closed, where it used to be is a pretty decent Chinese Buffett. I agree on the Galaxy as being good too.

Where is Miss Zipps? What kind of food do they serve?

What's the best place for breakfast? How about the best steak place?

Thanks! We love to check out different places to eat when we head up to Flag.

Country Host Restaurant. It is on Butler right by the I-40 and Butler interchange. It has reasonably priced food and a $3.99 breakfast that includes 2 eggs, bacon or ham or sausage, hash browns or home fries and pancakes or french toast or biscuits and gravy or english muffins or toast. Our kids love eating "breakfast for dinner!" The mushroom chicken dish is great! The cheese enchiladas are good too.

There's also Cracker Barrel, the old, American type restaurant where even adults can eat kid's portions for less and the candy store attached is a real winner for the kids for dessert! They feature pot pies, home cooked type foods like meatloaf and chicken and gravy or chicken livers etc. Cracker Barrel is just off the I-40 Butler exit but a bit pricier than Country Host.

Little America still sells some of the least expensive ice cream cones anywhere. It is off the same exit.

If you want to splurge a little on really distinctive Mexican food, try Acupulco Blue on Steve's Blvd just off US 66. Their prices are a bit higher than other places but their food is exceptional! The chile relleno is excellent and the rest of the food is wonderful. Not the same old Mexican food! We LOVE eating there!

La Fonda is good for regular (meaning not distinctive) Mexican food. They are just off hwy 66 in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Get there early, by 6PM there is usually a wait.
