I am thinking of relocating my family to Flagstaff. Seems like a nice place to raise kids. I was hoping somebody could give me some guidance/and or some advice.

My worry is finding a job. I have 20 years of manufacturing experince, and am currently a shift supervisor for a semi-conductor company. Is there work in the general area?

I'm not too worried about the price of housing and food. We live simple lives, and we just want to live were people are mellow, laid back, and just friendly.

As far as I know, manufacturing jobs in Flagstaff are limited to Gore and Purina. Not a whole lot of industry in town - mostly education and medical.

Flagstaff is a great place, all things considered. Jobs WILL be hard to come by. I would strongly advise you against moving to Flagstaff without a job secured first.

Also, simple lives or not, decent housing in Flagstaff is expensive and hard to come by. The people in town are great, and there's a vibe unlike anywhere else I've been, but getting a footing there might be tough.

Thanks for the quick reply to my post. I could tell that jobs were hard to come by based on research. I wouldn't move my fam without already securing a job, especially in this economy.

Default Relocating to Flagstaff

Flagstaff is an amazing place to raise children. We love it. If you can get a job at Gore, you will be set! My husband works there and loves it. It's a great company that treats their employees very well.

Flagstaff is a great place to live, but the economy here is terrible. Gore's your best shot, and even that's a stretch.

Best of luck, but it is beyond difficult trying to find a job here.

I think it's WL Gore - electronics manufacturing, if I remember correctly.

Gore does a lot of things, but I think the Flagstaff facilities mainly handle medical products.

Correct. Flagstaff's Gore facilities (there are several) handle/make durable medical equipment (mostly prosthetics, IIRC)

My wife and I left Flagstaff because we couldn't get jobs outside of the service industry even though we had college degrees. Now that we are settled in another state someone I know has a job at Gore and they have told me they can get me in. Oh well...what are you going to do? I like where we are now anyway. Flagstaff is a crazy mix of tourists, college kids and a large transient population. We have kids now and I would rather raise them where we are living currently. No more trying to dodge lost tourists downtown and no more drunk college kids wandering into the road and on the railroad tracks.
