Im looking for a quiet place with some natural beauty and easy access to some cultural activities. Also, I'm unfamiliar with a metal roof. Is there anything special I need to know to assess the quality of a metal roof?

My wife's parents live there. It is REALLY peaceful when we visit. It is on a mountain though so walking places can be a challenge (especially to the park that is right by the highway). My in-laws have a house that overlooks some green space and it is gorgeous. The wind hitting the trees makes me want to nap at all times while I'm there (or is it the altitude?)! It is a distance from amenities though, meaning you will have to drive into Flagstaff for everything, but it is not a bad drive at all (with no snow). You will be very close to MANY hiking trails as well as about a 30-45min drive to sedona.

First it is close to Flag but you can get stranded at home or in Flag if they shut down the interstate.
Next is access some houses have steep driveways and during the winter it is impossible to park on as it can turn into a sheet of ice. Then you have to make the trek up through the snow which can be a challenge.
Otherwise it is a beautiful, area over on the East side of I 17 is a guy who sells great honey.
The snowplow does try to get the roads plowed but it might be a blizzard and things don't get done as quick. So food and things could be essential if you have a power outage frozen pipes etc.
Whoops almost forgot to advise some areas by the creek can flood and if your place is low lying it can get wet.
And last Metal roofs are great, but there are different styles. Exposed fasteners with rubber washers those washers can get sun rotted and create a leak. I prefer hidden fasteners version and the edges are joined together with a metal seamer. If the panels are flat with no ribs they have the potential to oil can which can be found on google search. So its best if they have metal ribs. The chimneys should be located up high towards the ridge and secured well as the snow pack will snap vents and such off if not properly prepared. Some like snow dams some don't lots controversy there.
Metal in my opinion is the only way to fly.
Here is a link to my pictures of our cabin we just built up in Montana, up on the top right is a slideshow button. There are a LOT of pictures but in there is the metal roof I just completed on our cabin if you would want to take a look at one being put together. It is a 9-12 and 6-12 pitch to shed the snow better.
