If you look carefully at the center of the black flag, you can make out the silhouette of a man. Compare it to an POW/MIA flag, laying flat, and you'll see the rest of it. What you're looking at (took a picture of) looks like it may have been silkscreened, and much of the ink has come off from the wind and weather. You can still make out the center of the representation. It was not a simple black flag when it started out.

Don't turn away from it because it's worn out. Many of the men and women that served in recent wars aren't in much better shape, and those that didn't return are probably in worse shape.
