I'm into water sports, swimming, kayaking etc. Does Flagstaff have any areas to do this in the dog days of summer? Any parks with water and beaches?

Beaches? Here? Ah, sorry, no real beaches.

I think the only body of water suitable for swimming is Upper Lake Mary, and some would argue with that point, because it gets really muddy at times.

However, kayaking on that lake is pretty good, and there are some other lakes in the area that would work (Ashurst, others by Williams like Kaibab).

Lake levels are very low at the moment, FYI.

Swamp Mary? Pond Mary? Just a couple of different names I've heard locals derisively call whatever it currently is at the moment...

It's a very long drive to Page and Lake Powell from Flagstaff of late, but maybe that would interest you. There is a good range of water sports. It's about 170 miles since highway 89 collapsed due to a slump beneath the road.

I've swum in Lake Mary many times. It's very murky and typically cold but it's a large body of open water. Usually my wife accompanies me in her kayak, as there are a good number of power boats out there. If you're out there alone, you're pretty hard to see.

I believe NAU also has a 50M pool that is supposed to be nice.

In Winslow about 45 minutes there is clear creek, popular for swimmers not much of a flow but very deep I have never been able to touch bottom. Its pretty nice it's in a canyon lots of cliff diving, kayaking, and a a few motor boats. I would definitely recommend you check it out.

You forgot to mention the cliff diving is illegal and deadly.

Cliff diving in Clear Creek helps clean up the gene pool.

You can head South on 89A, and play at Slide Rock in Sedona.
