As curly explained, Slide Rock is not a Disneyland attraction - it's a natural formation. If you're referring to when it was purchased by AZ State Park, that was in 1985. When did you vacation there?

O/P, check out the link below to read about why people flock to Slide Rock.

"The park is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. Visitors may slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek.

On July 10, 1985, Arizona State Parks purchased the park property from the Arizona Parklands Foundation."

I lived in the canyon some years back and always found it amusing that there were plenty of secluded swimming spots along the creek that were EMPTY while Grasshopper point and Slide Rock were teeming with Sheeple. It's still that way. Most weekend warriors don't really want to be alone. They follow each others' backsides, just like sheep.

It's the Jersey Shore of Sedona. I like the canyon, but never go there any more because of the traffic for this one spot. Weekends are especially bad. My nephew always wants to go there when he visits. I tell him we'll drop him off and he can wait in line for hours while the rest of us do something interesting (he was 11 at the time). He's always opted to stay with us...

My wife and I took the "scenic" road from Phoenix to Flagstaff on our vacation last year, and we enjoyed driving up the canyon but Slide Rock bemused us. A short stretch of stream, and they want HOW much to park your car there? We stopped on the roadside above and took a peep down, and it looked as if it could be nice, but not worth traveling a huge distance for. We came away thinking that it must be the novelty of reliably flowing water in Arizona that makes it such an attraction.

What year was it exactly that Slide Rock was "added"?

Great moniker for that place. I think I'll "borrow" it.

I drove through the canyon twice last Tuesday. Although it wasn't as busy as a weekend, there was at least 200 people there. I can't imagine going there on a weekend or holiday.

When I was a kid Slide Rock was one of my favorite places to go. The 'slides' were sooo much fun! I haven't been there in years now except to drive by. I go up to Flagstaff by that route so seldom I forget what a mess it is driving up the canyon.

A good percentage of the Bud Light empties end up on the side of the road. These people clog up the shoulder of the road, often stepping out into traffic, as they fight for their free parking spots along the highway, and trudge with their kids and coolers to the park. After a few busy weekends of nasty children in dirty diapers frolicking in the water the place gets closed due to high levels of fecal coloform in Oak Creek. Just lovely . . . .

Driving up and down windy Oak Creek Canyon in the summer months, especially on weekends, is a dreadful experience. It's smarter to drive into Sedona/VOC via Route 179 from I-17 to avoid the tourists, RVs, and Slide Rock hordes. Call me a snob, but I would never go there myself. It's nasty.
This is exactly what I was trying to say! Thank you!

azdr0710, my first time to slide rock was in 1965. I don't remember it that crowded. I kind of thought it was still a 'secret'. It was great sliding down Oak Creek, kind of what they do in water parks today.

But I must admit, now that it's a state park, it is a zoo and would never go there again.
