That happened to us coming up from Flagstaff (with three children in the back). Highway northbound shutdown for four hours. We finally crept along until we got off at the Stoneman Lake exit, crossed over and headed southbound on I-17 all the way to Prescott exit. Drove to Prescott and then north to Ashfork and onto I-40 EASTBOUND to home. We got home at midnight. The next day I found out they didn't have traffic moving again until 2:00am! Glad I ditched the herd.
Lesson learned: carry water, snacks, spare diapers (Depends for the grown ups
) when driving in winter here.

Yep, if you're coming here in the winter, be sure you can stay a few extra days if you're snowed in, and have a backup plan for NYE if you suddenly can't get here due to the frequent highway closures.
