There is not too much grass, because there is no, or not much, rain. Take the advice, rocks in the yard, and your back wil be very happy....
Put plastic under the rocks, better yet, put plastic in yard and toss the rocks on top off it, and voila... no weeds...

I 'm not trying to make it Florida...just trying to understand. Did not realize that Flagstaff was considered desert since it is at such a high elevation. I had also seen something about them paying people to remove lawns??? My confusion should have been easily understood and was answered nicely by most posters.

Also a bit concerned about soil erosion and since you have what you call a "monsoon" season I was considering that to be harsher than our "rainy" season.
