We are considering retiring to Flagstaff. How is the medical care there for seniors? Are we better off being closer to Phoenix?

I don't blame you for considering a retirement in Flagstaff. I always enjoy visiting. Home prices are high for Northern Arizona but if you're coming from, say, California they won't seem that onerous.

However, if you know you will need specialist medical care, IMHO you would be better off being closer to Phoenix. Phoenix has the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix as well as a clinic facility in Scottsdale. There are other excellent hospitals as well.

U.S. News and World Report has hospital rankings by state:

Best Hospitals in Arizona | US News Best Hospitals

Hope this helps.

The good news is that Flag has a Level 1 trauma center.

Flagstaff Medical Center. Yes, that's great if you're planning to be in a 14 car pile-up on I-40.

Isn't it also highly rated for knee and hip replacements? All joking aside, that could be a factor.

Pretty much a full service hospital.

Availability of medical care is always better in the big city. If you live in Flagstaff, some specialists will not be available, some specialties will have visiting doctors with procedures done in Phoenix, and some will be in Flagstaff.

You need to decide how important easy access to all specialists is to you. If you have a known unusual medical problem that requires regular care you may want to be closer to Phoenix.

I would suggest that if you have appointments in Phoenix then allow yourself a LOT of time to drive there. It is not unusual for I-17 to come to a dead stop for hours due to a wreck. There are many places for big trucks to lose it. I like Flagstaff a bunch but it has rough winters and is very congested with traffic especially when the university is in session.

Cheers.
