Flagstaff has a sign up when you drive in from the West side talking about Flagstaff being one of the first STEM communities. I think your kids would do much better in Flag than in Sedona. I'm towards the Grand Canyon, North West of Flagstaff, and as far as the cold goes it is cold, but it is sunny and not that big of a deal. Worse then say Prescott but nothing compared to say Detroit.

Sedona is cool and all, but if might lose it's luster after awhile. You can always visit from Flagstaff. Also cheaper areas like in Munds park or East of Flagstaff might make Flagstaff more affordable.

I'd take the input from people here seriously. If you do try this commute, rent don't buy.

Good luck!

If you have a job in Flagstaff, you'll want to live in Flagstaff. Sedona to Flagstaff every day sounds miserable.

Sedona has its own culture. It's all about ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLES: Vegan/Vegetarian/Organic foods, androgynous instead of gender-obsessed, 'Spirituality' instead of the 'Orthodox' Big Box Religions, alternative forms of sexuality (Gay/Bisexual/Polyamory/Swinging/Open Marriages/Soft Swing...), Sustainable Living, novel building methods, Organic Gardening...

If you want to bring up your children in such a milieu, then Sedona will be a fit for you. If not, then not only will you be miserable, but you will be helping to dilute and ruin the local 'vibe'.

Sedona's NOT the kind of place where you'd stick Little Cody-Bob in Little League Football, and get Precious Tiny Meggin-Cherish onto the Pre-teen Pageant Circuit and going to Makeup Tutorial 'Girly-Girl' Slumber Parties. Not only is that sort of thing uncommon, but you'll find that a HUGE percentage of the population actively HATES what Mainstream America has been trained to think is "normal".

Flagstaff, on the other hand, is All-American/Apple-Pie-Normal - but with enough of an 'alternative' undercurrent to make things interesting. There are plenty of sports training facilities, etc., which are a draw for pro-athletes from around the nation. The climate is FABULOUS - dry and brisk. That was our regular overnight stop, when we were driving between Madison, Mississippi and Beverly Hills/Malibu.

Once, we drove through a cold snap big enough to put snow on the ground in Abilene. But Flagstaff was not disagreeably cold, that time. Lots of people DREAM of landing a job in Flagstaff. The demographics are amazingly good, considering how far south it is. I guess that the "cold" selects for a certain type of people.

For Heaven's sake!: buy your wife a cashmere overcoat, a sexy Angora sweater, some UBER-sexy thigh-high socks https://www.sockdreams.com/extraordi...high-high.html (in silk, Mohair, or Angora), silk long underwear (which can be unspeakably erotic), and some Merino wool items (and a big, down-filled parka, etc.)! Cold (what little there actually is of it in Flagstaff) is an OPPORTUNITY TO DRESS FABULOUSLY. Embrace the opportunity!!!!

This might be me in a few months, except the other way around. Wonder what the OP ended up doing. Have not lived in Flagstaff but we drive up there every weekend to eat, do the groceries, go climbing, avoid the tourists in Sedona. lol. Just wondering how different the trails in Flag will be like, i actually like the rocky and rolling trails in Sedona, not much the perfectly groomed single track trails which i've hiked/ran in Flag.
