These things are going nuts every evening outside the house we're renting and I can't figure out what they are.

I’ve heard this sound a few times walking my dog in the early evening. Didn’t hear it at all when we lived in the VOC, but have heard it at a specific area in our new neighborhood.

Wow a frog? I thought it was some strange bird. That's neat.

I thought it was cicadas, lol. I hike Sedona a lot and one early evening summer hike at Chimney Rock I heard a sound and asked my friend what it was, she said "oh, it's just a cicada". The next evening I was hiking alone and heard it and thought "oh, it's just a cicada", turns out it was a rattle snake and boy did my dog and I have a VERY close encounter. I could feel my heart pounding 3 hours later.
