People aren't going to stop moving where they want to be and local/regional government isn't going to stop it for multiple reasons (money, tax base, re-election etc). There's just too great a built in incentive to overdevelop. The water, or lack thereof will proceed along that same path. I selfishly would love to see great places stay lovely, resources preserved and "off the radar", but it's not realistic. I don't think NIMBY arguments or appeals to conservation work in cases of traditional residential/retail development.

No not die. Just be left with worthless real estate. Which is financial death to many. Its why i tell people to only rent out here. Invest your money in better investments.

Are you from back East? I notice those folks bring an assumption of population density that simply does not exist in the West. Most of Arizona is federal and Indian land. Many "towns" you find on a map turn out to be ghost towns. Arizona has two cities, some towns, and a lot of undeveloped land. And I hope it stays that way.

I just read back through this thread and realized I titled it incorrectly. I meant Flagstaff, not Sedona. Flagstaff is definitely on our list.

[Mod note] Title of thread changed. [/mod note]

Hate to say this but Colorado has better mountain towns. Better scenery, variety landscape, more green vegetation and water.

Yeah I'm sure you're correct, unfortunately we're getting priced out of any of those towns. Looking for other options.

Have you looked into Montrose, Delta or Cortez? Those towns aren't in the mountains technically, but close enough that it's a close drive. Cost of living is much cheaper than Durango and Telluride.

Any experience with Ouray? That place looks amazing.

As far as AZ im not sure there are any smaller towns that are still livable.

I can afford to live in Colorado but choose not to. I'd much prefer the variety of attractions / entertainment Phoenix / Arizona has, over CO.

Can get a quick jaunt to the pacific ocean beaches, Vegas, Grand Canyon, all in a few hours by car...much more attractive than living in CO imo.

I'd pay more to live in AZ over CO, but fortunately I don't have to.

Flagstaff called locally, "Poverty with a view" for a good reason. If you have the resources have at it. That said it's not like Flag doesn't have some glaring problems that make it far from ideal place to live, but all places have their pros and cons. Once they started building multi-storied buildings in town that blocked views I'd grown accustomed to - I had enough of the place. Enjoy the newer shopping near university housing off Butler. I'll fondly remember the older Flag. Sad to say, but all over US, many problems come down to population growth and all that that means to quality of life.
