stay away from miami.. Ft lauderdale or West Palm could be ok and driving distance for the nightlife in miami. I'd go Jupiter on the east coast or Boca raton.. West i'd go Sarasota.

How about Hollywood FL? I am looking at an ocean front spot there called the Tides. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you're looking for "pedestrian" neighborhoods, where you can walk/cab/public transport it around your area, as you can in Bean Town.
Mary Brickell Village is now a happening spot for 20-30 somethings. It's a great location to the Grove, Coral Gables, SoBe, Downtown and Key Biscayne. You can also hop on the People Mover or MetroRail, etc. There are some great pubs, restaurants and Tobacco Road gigs:

Other ideas would be: South Miami near Red/Sunset/MetroRail/UM, Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, Las Olas around Performing Arts Center in FLL and downtown St Pete Arts District.
