Ive lived a few years in the Florida Panhandle now, and im hearing more and more of this 'Civil War' overtone ; its almost as if the Civil War was still in effect ! Is it just a case of many Southerners resenting Northerners 'infiltrating' their homeland ... or is there jealousy of some sort ?? Im not trying to promote dissension by posting this topic, but Im just a little sad that this kind of thing seems widespread --- dont such people know that we are the UNITED States now ??? WHen i lived up north, I really found Southern folks very nice and loved thier accents .

A lot of it is due to transplants coming down and pricing out natives while trying to bring their old ways of life with them. This seems to be especially prevalent among New Yorkers, who seem to waste no time telling you that "(Florida city) is nothing like New York because...." and variants like that.

It's getting harder to find people who think the South will rise again, but they're out there and I don't think they're taken seriously as a whole.

It's part of the much larger symptom of angry, agitated America 2011. In the past (say roughly 1920-1985), anger/hatred of others was discouraged, and working together and striving for unity were encouraged. But lately, due to various media and politicians, it is now popular and even fashionable to be mad at others, and dwell on differences between people and obsess about them.

It doesn't help too that the country is having economic problems, and certain large demographic changes in certain areas. In the current atmosphere, instead of working together to solve problems, the modern disfunction leads to greater divides and hostility. With the south/north issue, it's just another variation of whites vs. blacks, or native-born Americans vs. immigrants, etc.

Also, people are just plain dumber these days, and less informed. Instead of reading books (with information in footnotes) and magazines - as in the past - many folks get their "information" these days from hate radio and the internet, where there are lots of pseudo-information and claims, but almost always without any reference or background details. It's quick, cheap, fast, and has the same poor quality as junk food.

I totally agree with this and as a native Floridian I can certainly relate to it based on the years I lived in Florida. I also would say it's not like that so much where I am now unless you get into the small rural towns and they just don't like anyone who's not local - northern OR southern. I think many northerners bring an "attitude" that Florida should be "grateful" that they're there, brought their money (that they earned in the north), and "saved" the state from their backwards, southern ways.

As for many who retire there, they have a nice retirement income, they then proceed to snap up available jobs for "something to do," and are willing to work for low wages because they really don't need the money - just something to keep them occupied - much to the detriment of the locals.

When I was growing up it was common to refer to northerners as Yankees with absolutely NO disrespect intended, otherwise they would have been referred to as d**n Yankees About 35 years ago when I was at work one day in late summer, a woman mentioned that the traffic was just awful. I replied that if she thought it was bad now, just wait til the Yankees get there. OH MY GOODNESS, did I get a tongue lashing

She told me that if it hadn't been for the Yankees coming to Florida, bringing their money, and the knowledge for progress there would still be alligators walking in the streets and we would be living in shacks, blah, blah, blah... I have never again referred to northerners as Yankees unless I knew with whom I was speaking

From reading the posts here, it appears that attitude is still alive and well in Florida. I could offer several other first hand experiences, but basically, it is that attitude that is very much disliked. Everything is better where they came from, yet they refuse to go "back home" and want to stay in Florida and complain.

I will also add that NOT ALL southerners feel this way, NOT ALL northerners have an "attitude" and it is probably worse in Florida than other states simply because of the sheer number of northern transplants there. I also have many friends from northern states, but all of them are happy to now be in the south

Of course you hear it in the pan handle.. it's the deep south there.

Simple. Too many people trying to change the way of life that always has been "the south".

Being a true Yankee. I never once was told Yankee go home, except for a friend/boss I had when I first came here, he was joking though. Funny thing is I have seen it said on City Data a few times... I don't think you get that Yankee talk so much in FL as opposed to GA, AL, SC, and a few others. I never see it down here.

Some may not like in huge influx of northerners whether it be the vacationers,snow birds or the new fulltime residents but lets not forget the huge amount of money and related jobs they bring to the state, so next time you here some one say yankee go home think about the economic ramifications if all the yankees did go home.

Agreed. In the part of Central Florida I live in, we tend to tell the Confederate Flag waving, "Hi 'yall"-ing, sweet southern comfort folks, to go home in a thick NY and/or NJ accent. Okay jk all are welcome, but I think you get my point.

You decided to live in the part of the Panhandle that had cross burnings as late as the mid-90s. It's closer to Alabama than Ft. Walton Beach in far more than a literal sense.
