I'm the proud father of a US Marine. He recently graduated boot camp and is currently assigned for his MOS training, in Pensacola . The Marines put on a wonderful family day and graduation ceremony at Parris Island.... truely a top notch event.

Here's a very interesting site on what our young heroes out there go through on a daily basis: Michael J. Totten

It's a site of one reader-supported independent journalist. Excellent writing skills.

I salute our current men and women of the armed forces. And their parents too! I think I'm seeing a passing of the torch of The Greatest Generation to a new breed of Heroes in the current generation of soldiers. When we Americans stop raising heroes like these, is the day we see the decline of our country.

An entertaining, yet informative site:

Thumbs up Inaugural Patriot Golf Day initiative announced for September 1

Great initiate to support our heroes:
On Sept. 1, public golf courses nationwide will request an additional $1 for each green fee they process, while private facilities will ask patrons to contribute donations. The funds will go to support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty.

.. to steer things back to what I think was the original intent of the post

Here's my Florida Hero (who also happened to serve as a fighter pilot in World War II, but it's what he AFTER his military service, that makes him a Florida hero in my book)

Mayor Vince Whibbs!

Vincent John Whibbs Sr., who died May 30 at age 86, was remembered by many as a man of faith and family who was relentless in his gratitude to God.
