I may have a rare opportunity to move to the lower keys with a good job in Key West. I'll need to make a quick decision if the I get the job.

If you live/lived in the lower keys and hate it -- why?
If you live/lived in the lower keys and love it -- why?

I love Florida and have many visits through the upper and mid keys. I love snorkeling and used to scuba almost every weekend late spring through fall.
My biggest concern is hurricane evacuation :P Is it as bad as it seems? What do you think should be my biggest concern?

Hurricane evacuation? Every couple of years you maybe asked to head over to the mainland, not really a big deal unless a hurricane comes through and wipes everything away.Think they had a big one Labor Day 1935..
I'd be more concerned about the cost of housing and insurance costs as i hear they can be extremely high.

Some of my research indicated that at 15% salary increase would keep my standard of living the same. Does that sound about right?

Agree with previous poster that it is the price of housing and cost of living down there that would be the main concern.
One thing people don't think about that hurricane evacuation can actually get expensive if you have to do it several times in one season. 2004 was hard on a lot of families here in Central Florida when they had to find hotels etc. so many times . That year we seemed to prepare for hurricanes almost every weekend. Thank God only 4 actually visited Florida. LOL
