Anyone know about Highlands County? Lake Placid, Sebring, Etc? Anything selling there? We've been looking at waterfront properties and notice a LOT of for sales but not many solds at all. Prices seem to be way out of whack with what the local economy can possibly support.

Anyone have input, opinions?

Thanks!

Great area, read other posts regarding it's benefits.

As far as lakefront out-of-whack. I disagree. If you want a fancy home on a desirable lake (lake june or jackson), a boathouse, and a million dollar view, your going to pay for it. The locals who live on the best recreational lakes are probably successful business owners here, or the homes are owned as second /weekend homes by owners who live in one of the nearby major cities and can afford it.
I wouldnt buy a luxury home then hope to get a job in a small town that will support it. (Unless your a successful business owner, DR or Lawyer.)
Before you sign any contract; determine what you will be paying in taxes and if you buy from an owner use a LOCAL real estate attorney. You can still get fantastic deals here as it is a buyers market...shop around! Spend a weekend here at Pratts on Lake June, rent a boat and see the area from a local perspective!

Default Highlands county

I lived in Highlands county for the last 5 years after moving from San Antonio, Texas. It was a big change for me because Sebring still a relative small town but after five years I can assure that it was a good decision. Highlands County still is one those rare places where you can still sleep good at night, crime rate is practicaly non-existance (compare to any major city) and its beauty is amazing. You can get all the information about highlands county that you need rigth here Highlands county florida real estate service for sebring, lake placid, avon park it help me lot when I moved.

//www.city-data.com/city/Sebring-Florida.html

Actually, the crime rate there is still well above average and in previous years was double avg.

I think we talked about this before, Mr. Tudo or am I thinking of someone else? Anyway, we'd stayed in Sebring a few times when we were in Fla. The area is very nice and very pretty. Employment seems very scarce and the people seemed so mixed there to me~Some were very nice and others we very rude~one extreme or the other.

I don't know if their prices have come down within the past 6 months, but it their real estate prices amazed me when we'd checked into it. They were extremely high, even higher then many other areas in Fla. I was puzzled how people bought those 300,000 to 400,000 houses with minimum wage jobs.

Now Lake Placid~we think that's just the cutest little town and the people seemed so welcoming and friendly there. They never did seem to have much employment there and I'd guess that now it may be worse.

BUT if you're retired and looking for a spot, Lake Placid may just fit what you're looking for. Hammock State Park is quite a popular place.

Sebring has a lot of long-timers and natives, but yet like any part of FL, you get those cranky retirees from the north, which is probably the unfriendly people you ran into. But overall, I think Sebring (and especially Lake Placid) is a friendly place to be.
