My soon-to-be husband and I are looking to move to DeLand, FL this summer. We feel that it will be better for both of our careers. I graduated from college with a biology and a secondary ed degree (with middle school endorsment) in may 2010. I have been subbing all this year, and had two great long term sub positions. The education system in RI is going to crap and jobs are scarce and only getting worse. I'll be set to sub in volusia county for the 2011-2012 school year if I have to, but I would really love a full time position. What are the prospects for this in that area?

Perhaps I should get into working at an aquarium or something. I think I would also love working with animals in that way.. I'm just so very crushed by the terrible prospects for education majors to get a job..

Forget here. If you somehow managed to land a job over the thousands of teachers in Florida who are about to loose their jobs, you would be on a pay plan that doesn't allow you to be accountable for your own actions. Rather the Student Success Act (merit pay) mandates that teachers pay and job security be determined by other people's actions and not their own.

Best of luck finding a teaching position in Volusia - I'm right there with you! (Good thing we're not competing, huh? I teach Spanish.)

Some advice from my own experiences; spread your net a little wider. Are you tied to Deland? If so, Seminole county is close, and Orange wouldn't be too far, either. Personally, I don't want to be in a large metro and I'm not tied to any particular area, so I've applied to Volusia, Flagler (better pay, btw, but a smaller district), and Brevard (these 3 are my top pics); I'm also planning on applying to St. Johns, St. Lucie, and Martin, as well as Charlotte and Sarasota on the Gulf coast.

All the talk, though, is that positions are going to be hard to come by. I don't HAVE to move - I want to; if you have to, I wish you the best of luck and pray you'll find what you're looking for. Who knows - come August we may be co-workers.

You might do better by the fact that you have your degree in Biology. Just keep in mind that FL is implementing an end of course exam in Bio and I think ALL students have to take BIO to graduate (could make for some very challenging classes filled with trouble makers who don't want to be there and are barely going to make an effort)

Also, ALL new teachers will be on annual contract forever now. Just year to year... even if you are the best teacher in the entire world.
