Dont be affraid to ask as many questions needed to feel out your hvac contractor. most contractors will try to avoid answering price breakdowns. dont go for the first, cheapest,or highest priced without 3 or 4 quotes.quotes should have all info on systems to be installed.

Youre not another whos duped on Trane are you ?! Ive been in the HVAC Trade since 1974 and the only reason Trane and Carrier get alot more money for thier product is to foot thier mega-million dollar Marketing and Advertising Program and so their Distributors can go on exotic vacations and get free choice cuts of Steaks based on how many units they move . I know..i used to work at a Carrier Distributor for 2 years . I have countless Customers who would never buy another Trane or Carrier ever again ; Trane has had numerous problems and massive recalls with their equipment including dangerous gas furnace heat exchangers in the early 1990's. Carrier the same with some of thier parts including deficient circuit boards in gas furnaces from the late 1990's. This is not including the near junk they both put out in the 1970's with leaking condensors and evaporators . Things havent changed too much today...heres a prize example :
YouTube - Multiple leaks in 1 year old Trane RTU! (Its not hard at all to 'stop a Trane' when the Factory does it for you !). I would caution anyone from spending an exorbinant amount of money just so the furnace or a/c unit can display the nameplate of Trane or Carrier ; virtually every other brand will last just as long, be just as quiet, and cool just as well ; and the money you save can go to put choice cuts of steak on YOUR table instead of someone elses . If you still insist on going with Trane or Carrier, at least tell them you want to go to their exotic vacation spots as well since youre paying for it . It upsets me when i hear Trane and Carrier touted as 'being the best' when they arent ; its just a big con job on the American Public ; 95% of all the other brands are just as good so long as they have a Copeland Scroll type Compressor in the a/c unit (which they do). Thats my advice from someone whos worked on just about every Brand out there over 34 years and who is unbiased without any axe to grind.

thanks
I don't know a lot about this subject, but I think that price is outrageous. I live in Baltimore, and just had my whole system replaced with a Ruud (heat pump and air handler, new cabling and wiring, new thermostat, but kept the same ductwork) for $3,900.00. And the whole job took about 6 hours. I guess this isn't much help, as my contractor isn't likely to be interested in a job in Florida, but even so, I can't imagine that the price should be so much higher there.

WOW !

My word...pay me that amount and i'll subcontract it out and you will have a nice system, and I'll have enough extra for an awesome vacation for weeks!

Honestly, I just had a new A/C system installed in May in my florida home. I got a 2.5 ton, 15 SEER (Awesome!!) Rheem A/C, heatpump with new condenser, new hurricane concrete pad, new air handler with a dozen good quality filters, AND all my ductwork cleaned for about $4,000 total. The only thing I did not get was a new thermostat and humidistat, only because i already had a very expensive one that was almost new already, and could not see replacing it.

I changed from R-22 to R410A, so I also got a new lineset, etc.....everything new.

My electric bill has dropped to over 1/2 of what it was the year before.

I am very happy.

Please get some other prices, and go with the company who will be there for you for the next 10-20 years.

Frank D.

These numbers sound realistic, most of the cost is the equipment. You can check out your neighbors house if it is the same size, you can see how big the unit is, and price it out yourself with a couple suppliers, and ask an HVAC contractor to give you an install only price, and give you some advice. There are options, and ways to breakdown the contractors price to see what is driving the number. I would still get three prices, and get references before you select the contractor.
