Hot, Heatwave, Heat dome is all I hear on the news! Here in MI we are in the 90's and it's all over the news. Seriously, does the news in FL broadcast this stuff every day or is it just the norm? We are in the mid 90's with heat index over 100 for this week and the power plants are holding off cutting off customers who haven't paid their bills because of the heat, they are opening cooling centers and having free bus transportation to them. I understand people can get heat exhaustion but seriously it's just heat.

When it's winter here and we get a foot of snow, people bundle up and go out or stay inside and stay warm. In the heat I would think drink a lot of water, if you have A/C stay in, if you don't sit in the shade, in front of a fan, go to the store where there is A/C...but they make it sound like this has never happened before.

We get like this every summer for a few weeks. True we have 4 seasons so we haven't adapted as well as those in warmer climates. My friend lives in Louisiana and said it's miserable there 6-7 months a year.

How well have you all adapted to the FL heat? In the winter months is it still really hot or comfortable?

i've only been here 4 months but it seems like even on the miserably hot days, it's "par for the course."

really though, aside from the UV index being noticeably higher here, there really isn't much of a difference in the summertime than where i moved from (dc). heat's the same, humidity is generally the same. the sun's rays are definitely stronger down here.

come winter, though, people up north will be complaining about the cold, the gray skies, and the snow.

I thought the heat and humidity was about the same just the north gets it for a shorter period of time. Yes I have to up my sunscreen when I am in FL compared to MI.

My husband hates the gray skies and everything looking dead in the colder months.

In your four months, have you seen a lot of rain and cloudy days? I read somewhere that Tampa Bay area has an overcast a lot and not as much sunshine as we would think.

a lot of rain? no. despite that tampa is technically "above average" so far this year for rainfall, we had a pronounced drought until last month. we came in mid march. it rained twice from then until early june.

cloudy days down here don't equate to the thick blanket northerners think of when they think of a cloudy day. more like partly cloudy many times. but no i have not noticed an abundance of overcast days here. august is supposed to the be peak rain month for florida so we'll see what happens then.

the moniker "the sunshine state" should technically be applied to arizona.

edit: when i visited the area last september it was already getting a tad chilly. had to wear a light jacket at night! *gasp*

We will be down 9/1-9/5 and I am hoping still nice enough to hit the beaches and no hurricanes. We are taking our girls down to get excited about the move and for us to check out the area.

The water is usually the warmest around late august/early september.

No problems with the heat here; I go on 10-15 mile bike rides in 92degree temps no problem. You get used to it.

This summer's heat hasn't seemed to be as bad as previous summers - this is my third summer here and I'm tolerating it okay. You really have to get out and get yourself acclimated - and get in relatively good physical condition to tolerate it. Overweight, out of shape people probably hate the heat more than anybody.

Even thought we are still in MI, we decided this summer to live more in the heat to see how we like it. We have only turned our A/C on recently with the 90 degree days and it is set at 80 instead of 73 which is where my husband use to keep it and all our friends still do. We go to their houses and freeze now! We sit outside in the evening while everyone is in their houses. I vacuumed the truck on my lunch hour in the 93 degree heat when normally I would say it's too hot outside and actually I survived. Sure I got a little sweaty but nothing like hitting the gym. I have always drove with my windows down and have every day thus far this summer.

I know once we get to FL it will be an adjustment not matter how much I try to prepare myself now, but I don't want to be an A/C Hermit either when we move.

Hubby has done our yard work while others are sitting inside. I think we will survive :-)
