RMD, That was classic! Too funny! The shame here is that you cannot get a position before you move unless you are a specialist in some area of demand. I just do not hear back from employers and I believe it is because I am not in Florida yet. We will have quite a bit of money to tide us over until we do get some type of menial job that will pay the household expenses. But you did make me think with that video. Thank you!

Please stay where you are. We have enough out of work people with multiple kids, no jobs, no prospects.

That's the most irresponsible thing you could do.

Stay away!

While this is a little harsh, it is the truth.

No offense, but is English your 2nd language? Because your grammar is not the best.

While being bilingual is wonderful, if you work in an office and have to communicate via email you need to be able to do that with a somewhat professional level.

It's bad enough when people move anywhere with no job and limited savings, but when they have kids involved that's just scary.

And remember the saying about houseguests and bread, they get stale after a week.

I believe it is yourself and 2 kids? Well that's 3 more people using the bathroom, showers, taking up space in the house.

You may wear out your welcome, which adds to the stress.

Things to consider.....are you getting help from state of NY?
Are you on programs like food stamps, housing help, etc...?
If so you will be on waiting lists here. If you are divorced have you gotten permission to move out of state with your kids from x and the court? I have had several nieces who had to change plans because court did not allow them to take kids out of state.

As for cheaper in Florida in some ways yes-others no.

South Florida is usually higher than some of the central or more rural areas when you come to cost of living. If you are planning to live with your parents than that will help out to start; but a 2 bedroom apartment in a good safe complex will be in the 750-1000 range in many areas. For a 3 bedroom on the intercoastal in central Florida we paid $1100. Electricity in an apartment with FPL cost us about $150 a month year round. Cable/phone/internet $145 a month. Rental insurance in the apartment was just $500 a year. Good thing we had it because of the hurricanes, too.

You will need a car.....everything is spread out down here and bus systems everywhere are more iffy than NYC. Gas is right at $3.95 this week. It will coast about $500+ to get tags, license, and register your car in the state. Full coverage car insurance for 1 car will be in the $500-$1000 per 6 months range.

Putting your kids in school usually comes with a page or 2 of stuff you are expected to buy at the beginning of the year.....things like pencils, paper, kleenex, paper towels not always covered by funding anymore. Some schools require you to wear uniforms.
Day care is not cheap.....after school care costs $100+ per child for some of our friends. If you have an under 2 year old, double daycare and you still provide everything they need in a day like diapers and food.

If you have kids who want to play sports like Little League, you pay to play down here in most cases. Sometimes there will be sponsors but not always so you buy your uniform. Even in high school sports we paid about $250 up front for our son to be on the team to cover uniform, food before games etc.

You will have an advantage that I didn't have-----you have family in the area. Even for me to go to the doctor or go to a movie, I had to pay a daycare.

Unless you have a degree and a profession $10 an hour is considered doing pretty good in Florida. Raises from retail and offices never seem as high as family up north say they got either. Unemployment is still near 10% and employers tend to low ball because they know there is someone out there that will work for what they offer. Raises in a lot of places were stalled for years; but this year part timers got between 15-25 cent raises where I work. Most places do only hire a few full timers and the rest are part timers so they don't have to pay a lot of benefits. . They guarantee a part timer 0-20 hours a week in a lot of stores. Health insurance is offered to part timers but is often more a week than they get with the hours they are scheduled. Personally when I checked into the insurance at store I work part time now since I retired, I found out none of my docs or the hospital we use would accept it. Sad...other hospital farther away does accept it and some docs do according to other employees.
The state does have kidcare but it is not free if you work. When my husband got laid off years ago I think I paid between $75-$100 a month for each kid.
