Has anyone ever seen one of these things? I'd hate to get caught in a swarm of these mosquitoes.

A galinipper indeed looks like a giant mosquito but it is a different insect, a crane fly. At least that is what I have thought all my life as a native Floridian. A crane fly doesnt bite.

Those big skeeters with the striped legs are Asian Tiger Mosquitoes, a recent import. They are bad news.

I think this article is mostly misinformation.

These things aren't crane flies or tiger mosquitoes. They're also found in other areas besides Florida, but it seems like they would thrive here.

I have experienced giant mosquitoes for some time here. Thankfully, a nice insecticide smoke drives them off in a hurry.
