I am currently in my last semester of college and am looking to move to Florida as soon as I am done. I have really liked the Clearwater and Tampa are when I have visited but I was hoping for some more input on different areas to look into. I am going to be a teacher so a good school system is also in my interest.

Good luck with the teaching career in Florida-you'll need it. Clearwater is kinda dull but the school system is better than a lot of the Bay area. I have a friend who's a teacher and she said the school board puts the newbies where they need them the most which is usually in the not so nice schools.

Sarasota has a very good school system. You might want to check the HR Dept and see if they're hiring: Sarasota County Schools Human Resources It does look like they have a few positions open, depending on your teaching subject.

If you want to be near the ocean my favorite part of Florida is Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale (Weston), Palm Beach Gardens (West Palm Beach).

Check out the Jacksonville area. St John's County is the number one ranked school district in the state, Nassau County and Clay County are 12th and 13th respectively (out of 67 districts). Jacksonville is a young city (average age 34) and has the lowest cost of living of the metro areas in Florida.

I'm going to be a bit tough love here, and ask why a high-performing school district should hire a brand new teacher with no experience in dealing with Florida's quirky and quaint teaching to standardized testing standards? Are you higher level science or math (physics/chemistry/ calculus)? English as a second language? Otherwise credentialed to serve special needs populations?

If not, the highest-performing districts are more likely to go with a teacher with 2-4 years in the state for a general kindergarten or high school English teacher position. So if you really want to move down here, you could be looking at putting in a few years at what would be your second or third choice district or a less desirable school in order to prove yourself and then move to a better school or a better district.

Two of the highest rated school systems are Okaloosa and Brevard Counties. Since Okaloosa is located in the Panhandle and cold in the winter, plus more tourist/retired-oriented, you might want to consider Brevard along the Central East Coast of Florida.

There is growth on the west coast from Tampa down through Sarasota/Venice/North Port. Start there. Be sure you have your FL credentials as a teacher.

Other areas to consider...

Winter Park (Orlando)
Dr. Phillips (Orlando)
Boca Raton (South Florida)
Weston (Fort Lauderdale)

These areas are very nice, safe, interesting and have great schools.
