I found this link on a thread in the General US Forum here on City-Data and thought it would be interesting to show how much of Florida isn't populated. We're second only to Maine it appears on the East Coast in terms of un-populated areas.

The Miami MSA has a swath of land west of it. I think some of it is for agriculture (around Lake Okeechobee). But some of it looks like land that would be use for future developments.

How bout we dont "develop" that land and build endless strip malls on it. What a freakin waste of a beautiful space.

I agree with the B8nk, how about we urbanize our already developed areas and keep our green areas green.

I believe it's the Everglades and Big Cypress Preserve.

You can also see the Okeefenokee Swamp up in Georgia. These are areas that just aren't inhabitable.

I agree. But there are probably a few developers out there who wouldn't mind sticking a few Wal-Marts in there.

And thats what it really comes down to in the end, developer dollars. They dont mind tearing down 100 acres of wetlands and displace millions of animals to build a few cookie cutter homes or a Walmart when FL cities have some of the largest sprawl in the nation.

Well, approximately 77% of the state's population lives within 20 miles of the coast. That should give you a good starting point.

The Agriculture is to the South and mainly in the East. The Western portions of Miami-Dade and Broward county along with mainland Monroe county will never see much more if any development ever again. All state and federal protected areas including Everglades National Park. Only way for Miami to grow is up which is exactly what is happening.
