If the landlord obtained a write of possession, the property belongs to him. If a writ of possession was not actually issued and you just left, then it depends on the language that is in the lease. The landlord may still be able to take possession of it or may end up having to follow the law as it relates to disposing of personal property in order to keep or sell it.

I'm not sure if this thread is about tenants getting thrown out, or owners dealing with foreclosure...? More details would be helpful.

Question requires clarification.

It sounds like you are referring to the personal property of a renter left behind in a rental house/apartment, following an eviction? In that case, the 'removal of all personal property and/or disposal of property left behind,' will be pretty clearly spelled-out in the Eviction Notice. For the most part, it would be considered 'abandoned property.' The dwelling owner would then be free to dispose of it at their own discretion, allowing the property to be cleaned-out for re-rental. That would pretty much be the case, even if you were referring to personal property that someone else claimed belonged to them, rather than to the evicted renter.

It really doesn't matter. A writ of possession is a writ of possession, whether it's issued to a landlord who is evicting a tenant or a bank taking possession of foreclosed property.
