My tags expire in December 2015 but you get a month grace period before you get fined in Colorado. I'm moving to Florida the 17th of January and I'm not sure if I have to renew my tags here AND register in Florida. I've read up on Florida's rules of registering within 10 days of becoming a resident (in my case, accepting employment on the 25th of January) and the fees but I'm not sure if I have to pay for registration in both states. I've seen similar threads about this type of thing but I'm assuming each state is different. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would personally think twice about moving to Florida, ex-Floridian via Miami talking here.

You move here, you have generally 30 days. Cops don't harass people for a month or so of expired tags from what I have seen. You will need to being the car to the tax office, bring proof of residency-2 pieces. Water bill, mail addressed to your location, etc.

Should cost about $375-400.

You don't need the residency stuff for the driver's license. For the license plate, the requirements are a lot less- pretty much ownership or lease documentation and proof of Florida car insurance. The state of Florida doesn't have to comply with Real ID rules when it comes to titling a car in the state so it just wants its money. Quite a lot of money compared to some other states for initial registration to the point it's common for newcomers to avoid registering a car in the state for as long as their old registration is still valid. Yes, it's illegal but since it's hard to tell who's been living here and for how long, it's common to risk getting caught.

The insurance and shiny new Florida car registration are actually two of the easier ways to generate the '2 proofs of residency' to comply with the Real ID rules so getting that done first instead of trying to dig around for a water bill or something so bring what you need (birth certificate, social security card and such) for the DL to the tax collector's office and they can do it as a two step process there.

Bureaucrats are funny.
If you show up in Florida with expired registration, you will likely run into some difficulties getting your title transferred to Florida. I would at least go to DMV in CO and request a temporary registration before heading south.
