I drive on weekends only and travel quite a bit. Today I went to my car and realized that my tags expired last week. I've never lived anywhere where the DMV doesn't notify you by mail/email that your registration is soon to expire. Does DC not do that? It would have been nice to get a heads' up that I needed to renew instead of driving around with expired tags.

Yes, they expired exactly one year after I registered my car in DC for the first time last year (9/18/11). Is something unusual about that?

Yes., I've never known any state to have anything other than a month and year on the tags. DC DMV says they send out a notification 60 days in advance. If you had provided your email address, then they sent an email.
