We're considering a transfer to Bartow from Massachusetts. I've seen some good things; I'm impressed with the library, and the Unitarian church in Lakeland, and the fact that we could afford a home in the area. I've seen on other threads that South Lakeland is the preferred place to be in the area, but I've also seen some posts warning not to move there with a family because of drugs, pedophiles, etc.
We have 3 children. Ages 9, 5, and 3. I'm hoping to hear the good and the bad about Bartow. Would it be to far of a commute from Auburndale? How about Lake Alfred or Fort Meade?

ETA - we previously lived in East orange County and would never move to Orlando again. We're aware of a lot of the negatives of Florida, and I'd like to know if you think this is a better area than Orlando was. Just a little extra info...now, throw a reality check at me!

Just wanted to comment on your posting concerning your move to Florida. I moved to fort Meade from upstate NY and have found that there is a very low crime rate here and I love the small town atmosphere. Also, even though Rt. 17 goes through this little town, I don't have to contend with heavy traffic. If you like a small town, friendly people and a slower pace, then you'll like it here.
