I lived in Miami Dade County. I went through Hurricane Andrew, Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Not all of these were direct hits, but we felt the effects and suffered damage from all of them. Andrew was devastating.

No real winds in my 53 years in Tampa or around Tampa. Worst was the no name storm in 1993 and what was a cold front.

A few years before you moved there Donna did some damage in Tampa. My neigghbors here on the East coast were still talking about the flooding from it on our street here in Brevard. Water was up to the windo sills with snakes and gators swimming by. That one was not a direct hit to Tampa either but it came up from Naples/Ft Myers to Tampa aand exited the state still with over 100 mph winds.

I have never been in a direct hit. I have been in the eye in several storms but the direct hit was always farther South in the state. The eye for David is the longest one I remember. It lasted almost an hour with absolutely no wind or sound outside before the rest of the winds got us. Had damage with that one. Then in Erin in ?1995? Had a little damage there too. Again came in about 40- 50 miles South and came up the river. Francis and Jeanne both caused damage and Thank God Mathew did its little zig at the last minute or we would have been in my first direct hit. We didn't have damage buut our neighbor did on that one. Lost a tree in Wilma but more a little wind by the time it got to us.

Sharks and gators tend to stay near home and just swim around and sleep.
Rude people do keep moving here, nearly overcrowding and overwhelming our southern hospitality.

With people and predators, you usually get what you give. If everybody seems rude, buy a mirror.

If that's not enough to worry about, we also have bears, cougars, bob cats, panthers and wild hogs running around. If the sharks don't get you, the sting rays or jelly fish will.

For those of us who survived Andrew it was pure hell afterwards. You literally walked around numbed trying to figure out how to obtain food , water and shelter even if you did have money. I wouldn't have wished that storm on my worst enemy!
I will flee anything around a CAT 3 or higher.
Never again.
