Looks like this thread got a little off topic. To answer the OP, "cheap" is a matter of perspective. Depsite the real estate boom, I don't ever remember thinking FL was "cheap". We built a new home 8 years ago in S. FL for around $178K. At the time, I certainly didn't think that was cheap. We were scared to death that we wouldn't be able to afford that house. I recently sold the house for $460K. Of course now, getiing a home like that for $178K would be "cheap". I don't know how people afford their first homes today. We were very fortunate to purchase before the boom. Even with the drop in home prices recently, they are a long way from being affordable to most families, especially if you are looking for your dream house.

It sits on a staligmite plateau shaped like a mushroom coming up from the ocean floor. There is no fresh water on the island anywhere other then collecting rainfall. I watched a documentary on it and one of the scientist said the right Seismic event could make it disappear over night. As well as it has to be eroding away underneath anyway and at some point will sink into the ocean.
