Got a home in 2008 or so using a va loan in Florida and then I got orders to Japan and spouse stayed with house. We got divorced while I was over seas and she didn’t pay on house. She was able to lock it up with a foreclosure lawyer while I was gone. ( Which I didn’t find out until the end of my tour in Japan) Came back from overseas and then got out of the service in 2017. They started foreclosure on the house and we did a loan modification on the house where she once again promised to pay on the house and then sell it. Instead she bought another house and the house in question is now in foreclosure again. My biggest fear is being sued for deficiency judgement. I don’t want the house nor can I afford anything really. If I short sale they would be able to come after me for the deficiency right? Can they do so if foreclosures finalized? What about a deed in lieu? I’m a disabled vet now and work part time. Hardly able to keep up with my bills and child support and I live in a deferent state.

What you really need is legal advice from a local attorney that specializes in real estate and foreclosures. Because the answers you need should be specific to your own situation, not general advice from people on this forum that are not lawyers, that do not know the details. Not getting legal advice could cost you considerably more than the consultation fees of a lawyer. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.
