Did you recently buy? I don't understand why your taxes would be high. As a new buyer they would figure to be higher most anywhere else. You can do research on millage rates on this site
http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/property/appraisers.html

Some places are much cheaper the others. For instance in the town of Chipley the millage is 21.6 but just stay in the county and it drops to 15.6 yet you live in the same place. You will lose some services but it can be worth it.

Your taxes should not be higher, but if you have done some home improvements that the county had to do permits the value of your home will increase and taxes will be higher.

As Macguy mentioned, you can still find cheaper places, but you have to research the market. In some places it might be better to rent to avoid taxes if the area meets your needs.

The Northwest Florida area is a great choice, but do your research because purchasing a home at the current prices will have healthy taxes. Our market is less expensive than central and south Florida, but taxes will still make an impact on your budget. Hope this helps...

thank you so much for the info. any other suggestions for moving into florida.
I don't want to go to punta gorda, ( sorry) boring. there is absolutely nothing to do there. pretty cute city , but....
I want safe, and interesting, and economical. not a hurricane target area.
i have to say i have been pretty lucky in cape coral.

I was wondering why the taxes would be so high in part of the county but not in another part. I live in New Jersey but want to move to Florida soon. I was looking at Sarasota but homes there seem to be so much. What is wrong with Cape Coral besides the taxes? Is it safe there? I don't have to worry about schools because my youngest is 19 and in college. What is the town like? There are some good deals on homes there right now. It seems like there was a lot of new construction going on when the housing bubble burst and there are new homes there just sitting empty. Is this the case? Thanks, Dolores
