My SO was offered a job in Washington County, and is moving up there in December. We don't live together now, but he wants me to move up there with him. I can't leave in December, because I just signed a lease, so I'll have to wait a bit. We were looking at towns there, and Chipley sounds nice.

Does anyone here know anything about the towns there? I can work from anywhere, and he will be working in Vernon.

Washington County is very rural by nature, and it's more affordable than other parts of Florida since the county does not have any coastline. Your closest cities and major towns would be Dothan, Panama City plus PCB, Defuniak Springs, Destin, and Tallahassee.

The main towns in addition to Chipley would be Vernon and Ebro. The area is great for a rural lifestyle, but you would have to travel to get to the major cities for many amenities. The main tourist attraction there would be Falling Waters State Park which is notable for a waterfall and a sinkhole.

If you can work from anywhere make sure there is some form of internet. Internet is severely lacking in this rural area, and quality internet , well forget about this.

For amenities, there are plenty of Dollar Generals scattered throughout Washington County. Chipley does have a Walmart and some chain restaurants such as McDonald's and Wendy's. There is only one community hospital in Chipley. I would recommend moving as close to the town as possible for Internet access and amenities.

I was worried about that, but they have a pretty active FB group, and someone on that told me the internet isn't so bad, that I can get the same speed I have here, and it's actually cheaper. Maybe it's gotten better since Michael went through, or maybe Chipley is better since it's the county seat?

Thanks. One reason my SO chose Chipley was because he was told the internet is pretty good there in the central areas, at least, closest to downtown and the government buildings. We don't eat out much, in fact, we're hoping to find a house with a yard so we can grow a garden. As far as a hospital, we are both pretty healthy (knock on wood) and as long as we can get a good GP, we don't mind driving aways to get to specialists, etc.

If you enjoy small town living, Chipley is a great place. Bonifay is nice as well, and it's actually a bit closer to Vernon even though it's in a different county (Holmes). I don't think Bonifay has a Walmart though, but I could be wrong...
