Given that even northern Florida has hot, steamy summers and mild winters, is it a reality that one needs to live with critters (roaches, water bugs, etc) in one's home or apartment? I would love to consider a relocation to northern Florida (Gainsville, Pensacola, etc), but don't want to share my apartment or home with critters or the poisonous sprays that exterminators use. Is it possible to find bug free living (indoors)? This is not about cleanliness, but climate. Comments?

Yes, pretty much. I won't use pesticides. Bugs don't necessarily come in, and if they did, you could get some diatemaceous earth to keep them out.

7 on and off years in South Florida and I have yet to see a roach in my house. I did see a couple in Orlando however. Most of the roaches down here have become fed up with the rude people, horrible weather, high crime, property taxes, and non-English speakers and packed up, so you are going to encounter more when you head further north. My theory anyway.

Really though, N. Florida has a lot more intact nature left. More intact nature means more roaches and other creatures. There are simple and effective ways to treat for pests, like placing traps. If that doesn't work, there are natural pest control companies out there.

I live in Lakeland, in an old 1920's house, and I have no roaches or bugs in it, and use NO pesticides. But I leave nature alone, and have a lot of critters like birds and lizards outside that help out in this regard (the eat the bugs). It's best to work WITH nature, not against it.

One big thing that helps is do NOT plan a lot of vegetation up against your house. That is one thing that draws bugs and roaches and increases your chances of them coming inside.

I live in Panama City Beach right now and have never had a roach in my house since having it built 6 yrs ago. I've also lived in Jacksonville and didn't have roaches there. I did have roaches when I lived in Palm Harbor, north of Clearwater area.

11 years in Navarre, never had a roach or ants in the house. Weather was not a factor....
