I hope someone can help me with this question. Let's assume I live in New Hampshire (which has no sales tax) and I move to Florida. When I come to register my car (which I purchased in NH) will I be required to pay a sales tax on it? Thanks in advance for your responses.

According to the Florida DHSMV:

You bought it more than six months ago
If the motor vehicle was purchased six months or more before being brought into Florida, Florida sales or use tax or local discretionary sales surtax do not apply. You'll need to show proof that you used it for six months or more in another state or jurisdiction.

You bought it less than six months ago

If the motor vehicle was purchased and used less than six months in another state, territory of the United States or the District of Columbia, the full amount of the six percent Florida sales or use tax and local discretionary sales surtax is required. However, that is offset by the sales tax you paid in the prior jurisdiction. For example, if you owe 6% to Florida, but you paid 4% to another state, you will only owe 2% to Florida.

They changed the rules as shown above, back in the day if you moved your residence to Florida the state would hit every car that crossed the state line, made the news regularly, it was stopped due to outrage and legal reasons.

Hope this helps,

It depends on how long you've had the car:

However, you will get hit with a 'plate fee' the first time you register a vehicle in the state, and that runs something like $200-$300 in addition to the annual registration charge. It's effectively a tax on new residents since you can transfer that plate from old and sold (or junked) vehicle to newly purchased vehicle once you're down here with no additional plate fee charge- just some paperwork and the usual annual registration fee.
