As a matter of fact I did the same thing almost 8 years ago. Bought a house without ever stepping foot inside, drove here 30 days later, called my Realtor and asked for directions to my house. Talk about jumping fof the deep end! Anyway, I love it here and am happier than I have ever been. I settled into the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area after 1 what I would call exploratory trip. The area growth is phenomenal however you are not in the Big City, but still a short drive to Orlando, Tampa, Miami, the Keys -- all very convenient.

If you plan on just packing up and coming down to FL, I recommend the St. Petersburg area for housing and employment. Plus, the convenient location of St. Pete offers you the opportunity to also be close enough to access other large cities with great job markets. After years of planning, that is how I finally moved to FL because it seemed that no matter how much planning I did, something always came up. I stayed at a hotel the first night I was in St. Pete, got the next morning's newspaper, and by that afternoon, I had a place rented and a job in a couple of weeks. I never regretted that decision. The only regret I have had since is that I thought St. Petersburg and surrounding areas were representative of all of FL, and it wasn't. I made the mistake of moving to Ft. Myers to join fiance here, and things are SO DIFFERENT here (in a horrible way). Good luck. Hope you find what you are looking for.
