I just find out that if you get a traffic ticket for driving 20 miles over the speed limit you go to jail ( a friend experienced this today). Were you aware of this ? Also how many tickets in the past 5 years?

lol the car salesman when I got our new car said "how sad" when I told him I don't drive fast he said I had to take the new car out and "open it up" on the highway i said I guess i will have to find a highway that has a 75 mph speed limit then . or it won't get "opened up"

BTW--I think that "Power" to arrest a Good Citizen who happens to be doing 20mph+ should be withdrawn...

I haven't had a moving violation in maybe 30 years and I was found not guilty of that. I did however according to what I read in the paper, hold some kind or record for parking violations. This was before boots or towing cars, they just kept giving them to me and I just wouldn't pay in protest. I owed somewhere around $5,000. with late fees and penalties when tickets were like $2.00 and I ended up never paying a cent.

Default Reckless driving!!

I think in a few states, 20 miles over is considered Reckless driving, which can come with jail time but is usually suspended with a rather large fine.

In Miami, everyone drives 20 mph over the speed limit. Sometimes they do it as they pass the police. The only way someone would get arrested while doing 20 mph over the speed limit is if they are in a school zone, running stop signs and driving on the wrong side of the street. Then, they could take it to court and the judge will probably dismiss the citation anyway. Under the 316.187 and 316.189 statues, it's not a criminal offense. If they write you under the reckless driving statue, it's a misdemeanor. The person has to exhibit willful and wanton disregard for persons. There had to be something more to your friend's story than just doing 20 over.
