Most places north of Palm Beach County would be southern. I'd go with Tampa or Jax, but the traffic would be an issue. Florida is really "southern", though.

Jax traffic is nothing compared to Tampa, Orlando or Palm Beach/Ft laud/Miami gridlock.

I think you would love Tampa Bay Area - Tampa and St. Pete are larger cities with lots to offer - Tampa has the urban vibe with more business, and lots of night life - St. Pete the great beaches, with lots of art and culture. Much smaller overall than Miami with a good mix of diverse residents.

Check it out, I think you would be pleased!

As for "good old boys", my father and his entire family is from the South and they are very "southern" so I have nothing against southerners. Although I've visited the south regularly due to our large extended family who still lives there, a southern lifestyle does not suit me personally. I didn't say that I want to live in a city that has NO latinos/latinas or a place that has NO southern culture. I specifically asked for a "happy medium" between the two. I don't think one would have to know me personally to respond to this. I think it is a pretty direct question.
Terribly sorry you took MY post the wrong way. I didn't mean to infer that you didn't "like" hispanics or rednecks, good ole boys, whatever you want to call them. Now that you've clarified things, I agree with pirate girl & hereinfla about Jacksonville. More specifically St. Augustine. It's a very cosmopolitan town for its size. There's always some kind of festival going on, plenty of great restaurants & bars & an easy commute to Jax, where the economy hasn't seemed to be hit by the construction slowdown as it has in many areas.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions. I will add St. Augustine to my list of places to look into. I've heard that St. Augustine has a very European feel to it. Would most of you agree?

no, to me it has a very touristy feel to it downtown and outside of the historic district it's like anyplace else. Downtown in the historic district you'll find old homes, shops and restaurants in a small walkable area, if that makes it european in flavor, ok I'll play along
That isn't a negative view, just an objective one.

I agree with this post. I love St. Augustine, but other than the old downtown, it is like a lot of other towns. And it is VERY touristy, very. If you are OK with that, it's a neat place.

Try Sarasota or Ft. Myers on the West Coast. They have a wide range of races represented without the crime of Miami and other urban areas. They also aren't boring (If you're over 21 or female over 18). Lee County has about 600,000 people and sarasota has a little bit less. Also, Lee county is more affordable than South Fla. Its still expensive compared to other states. What are you looking at career wise?

Thanks, small and touristy isn't exactly my cup of tea. We have lots of tourists where I am now at the Jersey Shore and aside from the added traffic during the summer months, it doesn't bother me much, but I'd like a larger "downtown" sort of area. Maybe I'll just place St. Augustine on my list of places to visit.
